Those who serve others often experience prolonged exposure to stress, pressure, and emotionally demanding situations. Over time, this can take a toll on focus, mood, and overall well-being. Learning how to intentionally regulate your nervous system is a foundational mental skill.

A Quick Tip
Regulate Your Stress Response
One simple technique you can use is box breathing. Inhale for four seconds, hold for four, exhale for four, and hold again for four. Practicing this for just two minutes helps calm the nervous system, restore clarity, and reduce the physical effects of stress.
If you had an exceptionally stressful event, we recommend exhaling for an extra second. Visualize the toughest parts of your day being blown out with that extra second between the four and five count.
Using this technique regularly (before shifts, during breaks, or after challenging calls) can help create a greater sense of control, grounding, and emotional stability.
